A Warm Loving Homelike Environment for Children
A Support for Families During Stressful Times

The Bay Area Crisis Nursery was established in July of 1981 and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are a member of the Local Independent Charities organization and are listed with United Way as 'BAY AREA UNITED WAY #2009'.

The purpose of the Nursery is to prevent abuse and neglect of young children by providing support to families who are in stress or crisis. Child abuse ordinarily happens during such times. We operate on the belief that parents don't want to hurt their children.

Our services are free, confidential and voluntary.

CRISIS NURSERY CONCEPT - For the child we provide a home away from home. Our 24-hour residence provides a warm, safe, loving, homelike environment for the little ones whose parents are temporarily unable to care for them. In times of stress or crisis, if a safe place exists for their children, parents will admit their children in order to have the time to alleviate the crisis, to reduce the stress. When the children are safe, the parents are able to seek the help they need.

CLIENTS - If a parent feels they are in crisis then they are in crisis. As long as the parent is willing to form a plan to end the crisis or reduce the stress, the Nursery will work with them. Parents come due to physical, emotional or mental problems; they come when they can't provide for their children due to loss of their homes and/or jobs; they come when they realize that their child is in control; they come when drug or alcohol addictions get the best of them.
For the parent we provide support and encouragement. Our staff helps the parent find the resources necessary to work through the crisis, to stabilize the family. The Nursery frees the parent of childcare responsibility so that they have time to focus their efforts on resolving the crisis. We help them to help themselves.

FUNDING - Bay Area Crisis Nursery is a people helping people organization. We depend on the generosity of the community to keep these services available to our families. For 18 years we have depended on private donations. We do not seek or solicit Government funds. By doing this we are able to serve any parent who wants help. We do not have to wait until abuse occurs, rather our focus is on prevention. Approximately 80% of our funding is supported through contributions from individuals, groups and organizations. The remaining 20% is provided through corporate and foundation grants. Each year we broaden the base of our donations.
